GIS Summer Fellows Program (2005)

With support from the AQF, the GIS Working Group organized a Summer Fellows Program for 2005. Eight graduate students selected from the social sciences and related fields received training in spatial analysis and GIS. The broader purpose of the program to support the integration of spatial dimensions into research and teaching in ways that reflect the distinctive character of departments and programs at Columbia.
The Fellows met weekly during the summer for training and to plan and report on their work, and were advised by research staff from CIESIN, CCNMTL, and ISERP. Over the summer, the Fellows:
  • develop a spatial/GIS mini-curriculum (e.g. a one-week module) to be integrated into a graduate course in their department
  • develop a spatial research bibliography, listing exemplary papers in their field which use spatial perspectives
  • inventory GIS-related research projects in their departments
  • develop content appropriate to their discipline for a digital demonstrational tool
  • assess geospatial data available at Columbia in light of faculty research priorities
Qualified students were nominated by their departments or programs. To ensure department/program support for these department-specific efforts, each nominee was asked to name a faculty sponsor for their GIS work and identify the course in which the spatial mini-curriculum would be introduced.

The summer fellowship assumed a half-time commitment during the summer months and carried a stipend of $5,000.
