Integrating Spatial Dimensions into Teaching and Research

  • GIS Summer Fellows — We have sponsored the first round of the GIS Summer Fellows program for graduate students to receive training in spatial analysis and GIS as well as to help in developing further resources for CU including a one week mini-module on GIS/spatial analysis to be integrated into graduate courses in their field, a spatial research bibliography, and a digital demonstration tool.
  • Workshop Subsidy Fund — We encourage Columbia's many seminar and workshop series to invite leading scholars doing innovative spatial research by offering periodic funding for travel expenses for outside speakers.
  • Spatial Social Science Conference — We will hold a conference on spatial social science that features researchers based at Columbia but may also include speakers from NYC-area universities. Please check back for details.
  • GIS Digital Demonstration Tool — We will develop a sophisticated GIS demonstration tool that will be accessible through the Columbia GIS website and can also be used in presentations by librarians and GIS resource staff. This tool will describe what GIS is and how it can be used, and give visual examples of spatial analysis drawn from a range of disciplines.
  • GIS Intern — We will hire and train a part-time GIS Intern who will be available to faculty free of charge for mapping or small-scale data management and analysis, with a cap on the number of hours provided.
